Nanotech Competitiveness Report: Israel is a technology development powerhouse but lack the ability to compete internationally
Israel rank as a nanotechnology development powerhouse, but it’s lack the ability to support internationally competitive levels of nanotechnology activity, according to a report from Lux Research entitled "Ranking the Nations: Nanotech's Shifting Global Leaders."
The Dominant countries in nanotechnology internationally today are Germany, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. Based on projecting nanotech competitiveness through 2012, the report found that the U.S. and Japanese dominance will continue, but with a narrower margin over other leading countries, as Taiwan and China will challenge them for leadership in the next seven years.
Israel, Taiwan and Singapore rank as "Niche Players", based on their technology development strength, which gives them the ability to commercialize these innovations. Those three countries take advantage of focus on particular applications to compensate for weak overall nanotech activity.
The report emphasizes that, in a globalized economy, commercial horsepower is just as important as invention and discovery. "Many countries are investing millions or billions in primary research into nanotechnology," said Lux Research Senior Analyst David Lackner. "But the true winners - who reap the rewards of those huge investments - will be the ones that discover how to incorporate nanotechnology breakthroughs into new manufacturing techniques, medical treatments, and finished products."

New Israeli Investment Company Proloque raised capital from VC fund Pitango
Prologue Technology Entrepreneurship, a new Israeli entrepreneurship and investment boutique founded by Dr. Rafi Gidron, Orni Petruschka, Nimrod Goor, and Albert Olier, completed raising its initial funding from Pitango Venture Capital.
Prologue employs a novel business model of identifying, screening, building, and commercializing of innovations in emerging technologies, primarily in nanotechnology. Prologue already made their first investment in an Israeli start up called Bionnections, a new company that develop a self-assembly technology for next generation interconnects in VLSI devices.
Bionnections' technology introducing a new type of conducting nano-wires, having improved characteristics with respect to heat dissipation and durability to electromigration failure. With its hybrid approach, where the front-end remains based on existing Silicon technology, Bionnections protects large capital investments of semiconductor manufacturers.
